Close-up of creamy homemade butter in a small glass jar with a spatula, showing smooth, freshly whipped texture.

Homemade butter is made by churning heavy whipping cream until it separates into rich, creamy butter and fresh buttermilk. This simple from-scratch butter has a fresh flavor and smooth texture, perfect for spreading on bread, cooking, and baking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream (36% fat or higher)

  • Salt, to taste (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour the heavy whipping cream into a mixing bowl or food processor.

  2. Beat on medium-high speed until the cream thickens, becomes grainy, and the butterfat separates from the liquid.

  3. Pour off the liquid (buttermilk) and reserve if desired.

  4. Place the butter into a bowl of ice-cold water and gently press and rinse until the water runs clear.

  5. Add salt if using and mix until combined.

  6. Store or use immediately.
