How to Make Evaporated Milk at Home

This homemade evaporated milk is an easy pantry substitute made with just one simple ingredient. It’s creamy, unsweetened, and perfect for soups, casseroles, sauces, baking, and coffee—no store run required.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk

Instructions

  1. Pour the milk into a saucepan and place over medium-low heat.

  2. Bring to a gentle simmer, making sure the milk does not boil.

  3. Simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the milk reduces by about half.

  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool. The milk will thicken slightly as it cools.

  5. Transfer to a jar or airtight container and refrigerate until ready to use.

Notes

  • Whole milk produces the creamiest result, but 2% can be used.

  • Do not boil the milk—gentle simmering prevents scorching.

  • Stir before using, especially after chilling.
