How to Make Sweetened Condensed Milk at Home

This homemade sweetened condensed milk is rich, creamy, and made with just two simple pantry staples. It’s the perfect substitute for store-bought condensed milk and comes together easily on the stovetop—no last-minute store run required.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Add the milk and sugar to a saucepan and whisk until the sugar is fully dissolved.

  2. Place over medium-low heat and bring to a gentle simmer. Do not boil.

  3. Simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring often, until reduced and thickened.

  4. The mixture is ready when it coats the back of a spoon and has a thick, pourable texture.

  5. Remove from heat and let cool completely. It will thicken more as it cools.

Notes

  • Keep heat low to prevent scorching.

  • Stir frequently as the milk reduces.

  • If the mixture becomes too thick, whisk in a small splash of milk while still warm.
